Dee Monje, Assistant Executive Director

My journey to Brookwood began while I was attending the University of South Florida for my Bachelor’s Degree.  In 1991, I was working part-time for the City of St. Petersburg Recreation Department and was looking for a full-time position.  A co-worker mentioned that she worked at a group home and that I might be a good fit for a position as a Youth Care Worker.  She described a fascinating and inspiring program that I had never heard of before.

I started at Brookwood in December 1991, and at that point was uncertain of what career I wanted to focus on.  Pam helped me find my passion and encouraged me to continue my education.  Pam has inspired, guided, encouraged and supported me in becoming the best I can be in every aspect of my life, as she has always done with all of the girls who have lived at Brookwood.  I have never forgotten the four things that she told me were needed to work with the challenging behaviors of our girls; common sense, good judgement, patience and most of all, humor.

I completed my Master’s Degree at USF in Mental Health and Rehabilitation Counseling in 2001 and became a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in 2004.  I have worn many hats since arriving on Brookwood’s doorsteps almost 27 years ago (YCW, Case Manager, Counselor, Intake Coordinator, Program Director).  I have helped and witnessed over 4000 girls become stronger, self-sufficient, competent, independent, and amazing women.  Many of those women have gone on to become mothers and have broken the cycle of abuse by using and teaching their own children what they learned here at Brookwood.

As the Assistant Executive Director here at Brookwood, I am the first to welcome each girl who enters our Brookwood family.  I am looking forward to continuing to be a part of each girl’s journey into adulthood, independence and success, for many years to follow.
